Sleep Sedation

What is Sleep Sedation?

Sleep sedation, also known as IV sedation, makes lengthy or complex dental treatment more comfortable and easy for you. It can help remove anxiety, stress, discomfort, memory, and awareness of the procedure. You enjoy a relaxing sleep whilst you maintain your ability to breathe for yourself, maintain your reflexes, and your ability to respond to us if required. You will still receive a local anesthetic (freezing) after you are sedated. Following your procedure, you will be given appropriate recovery time in which you will be closely monitored.

The Process

Below are the 4 steps for a sleep sedation appointment:

1

Consult With Dentist

First, book a consultation with the dentist. At the consult Dr. Van Biezen will take vitals, discuss the treatment plan, go over the sleep sedation process and answer any questions. We accommodate out-of-town patients with consults over the phone.

2

Discuss Financials

The next step is discussing the financials with our administrative team. If a patient has insurance, a predetermination will be sent to them before giving the estimate to the patient. Our administrative team will then help find a day to book the appointment. A $200 deposit will be required to hold the appointment.

*Note: Some insurance won’t cover sleep dentistry sedation if done in conjunction with some dental treatment

3

Prepare For The Day

To help patients prepare for the appointment day, our administrative team will email consent forms, and pre-op/post-op instructions to review prior to the appointment. This way, if patients have any questions, they can be answered beforehand for a smooth appointment day.

You will need to organize a ride home and someone to watch you for the rest of the day.

4

Appointment Day

Finally, it’s the day of the appointment. A receptionist will ask for the phone number and name of the patient’s ride. Once patients are brought into the operatory by one of our dental assistants, they will be seated. When Dr. Van Biezen arrives, they will review the procedures for the day and review the consent forms. Once the consent form is signed, the IV will be inserted and treatment will begin.

Let your ride know that they are required to come into the office when they pick you up so Dr. Van Biezen can give them instructions and help them walk you out to the car.

FAQs

Here are some of the most commonly asked questions we get about sleep sedation.

When Is Sleep Sedation Recommended?

Sleep sedation is most commonly recommended as a sedation option for adult patients who have dental anxiety and are getting more complex treatments, such as extractions.

What Is The Difference Between Sleep and Oral Sedation?

Although similar, sleep sedation allows the dentist to have more control over the dosage so they can adjust it to the individual patient.

Can I Eat Or Drink Before My Appointment?

Read our pre-op instructions to learn what to do to properly prepare for your appointment.

How Long Does The Sedation Last?

Just like dental freezing, the effects of sleep sedation depend on the individual patient. Typically it lasts a few hours and most patients tend to sleep it off. This is why we recommend patients take the rest of the day off work or school.
